MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating is a measurement scale designed to evaluate the effectiveness of air filters. It was developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) to provide a standardized method for comparing air filters based on their ability to capture airborne particles.

ASHRAE Air Filter Rating Scale
MERV ratings range from 1 to 16, with higher numbers indicating better filtration performance. The rating is determined by measuring the filter’s ability to capture particles of varying sizes (ranging from 0.3 to 10 micrometers) under controlled testing conditions.
Here’s a general overview of MERV ratings as they relate to residential air filters:
- MERV 1-4: These filters provide the lowest level of filtration and are typically made from fiberglass or synthetic materials. They are designed to capture larger particles, such as pollen, dust mites, and carpet fibers. MERV 1-4 filters are not recommended for individuals with allergies or respiratory issues, as they do not efficiently capture smaller particles that may trigger symptoms.
- MERV 5-8: These filters offer improved filtration compared to MERV 1-4 and are suitable for most residential applications. They can capture particles like mold spores, pet dander, and dust mite debris, making them a better choice for allergy sufferers. MERV 5-8 filters are commonly made from pleated materials, which increase the surface area and improve particle capture.
- MERV 9-12: These filters provide even better filtration performance and are suitable for residential use, especially for individuals with allergies or respiratory issues. MERV 9-12 filters can capture finer particles, including auto emissions, lead dust, and some bacteria. They are generally made from pleated synthetic materials or electrostatically charged fibers that attract and capture particles more effectively.
- MERV 13-16: While these filters offer the highest level of filtration, they are typically not recommended for standard residential HVAC systems due to their increased airflow resistance. MERV 13-16 filters can capture particles as small as some viruses, tobacco smoke, and fine allergens. They are more commonly used in commercial buildings or specialized residential applications, such as homes with highly sensitive occupants or those with specific air quality concerns.
When selecting an air filter for a residential HVAC system, it’s essential to consider factors such as air quality concerns, allergy sensitivities, and the compatibility of the filter with the existing system.
Higher MERV ratings may provide better filtration but can also increase airflow resistance, potentially reducing the system’s efficiency and performance. Always consult the HVAC manufacturer’s guidelines when selecting an air filter to ensure optimal operation.
