Mini-split A/C systems are a great way to cool and heat your home, but like any other appliance, they need to be serviced and cleaned regularly. Following these simple steps, you and your HVAC tech can keep your mini-split system running smoothly and efficiently for years.

Step 1: Clean the indoor unit

The indoor unit of your mini-split system is the part that you see mounted on your wall. It contains the evaporator coil, which is responsible for removing heat and humidity from the air.

To clean the indoor unit, first remove the air filters. You can usually do this by simply sliding them out of the unit. Once the filters are removed, vacuum them with a soft brush attachment. If the filters are heavily soiled, you may need to wash them with a mild soap and water solution.

Once the filters are clean, you can wipe down the inside of the indoor unit with a damp cloth. Be sure to avoid getting any water on the electrical components of the unit.

Step 2: Clean the outdoor unit

The outdoor unit of your mini-split system contains the compressor and condenser coils. These components are responsible for removing heat from the refrigerant and releasing it to the outside air.

To clean the outdoor unit, first remove the shrubbery and any debris that has accumulated around it. Once the area around the unit is clean, you can spray the condenser coils with a coil cleaner. Be sure to follow the directions on the coil cleaner label carefully.

After spraying the condenser coils, let them sit for a few minutes to allow the cleaner to work. Then, rinse the coils with a hose to remove the cleaner and any dirt or debris.

Step 3: Check the refrigerant level

Refrigerant circulates through your mini-split system and absorbs heat from the air. Over time, the refrigerant may leak from the system, reducing its efficiency and cooling capacity. Checking the refrigerant level is a job for a qualified professional.

Step 4: Schedule a professional service visit

Even after following the steps above, it is still important to have your mini-split system serviced by a qualified professional at least annually. During a service visit, the technician should clean the system thoroughly, check the refrigerant levels, and inspect it for potential problems.
