Fenestration

« Back to Glossary Index

In construction, fenestration refers to the openings in a building’s exterior, particularly windows, doors, and skylights. It encompasses the arrangement, design, and installation of these openings, as well as the materials used to create and cover them. Derived from the French word “fenêtre,” fenestration plays a vital role in a building’s energy efficiency, lighting, ventilation, and overall aesthetics.

CODE: Building codes specify minimum performance standards for fenestration products, such as U-factor (thermal resistance) and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC).
