Thermal Bypass

« Back to Glossary Index

A thermal bypass is any unintended pathway that allows air to move in and out of a building. These “avenues of air flow” allow heat to transfer around, through, or behind the primary insulation layer. Air sealing primarily aims to prevent thermal bypasses, which significantly contribute to issues like poor indoor air quality, cold spots, wasted energy, and various other concerns. You should consider the thermal bypass as one of the top concerns every homeowner should address.
