Sonotube® is a registered brand of round fiber forms manufactured by Sonoco for casting concrete columns, piers, and similar cylindrical concrete elements. In everyday construction language, “Sonotube” is often used more broadly for disposable fiber or paperboard concrete forming tubes, although other manufacturers make comparable products.

Explanation

These forms are made from multiple layers of spirally wound paperboard or fiber material bonded together to resist wet-concrete pressure. The tube is positioned where a round concrete pier or column is required, reinforced as specified for the project, and filled with concrete. Depending on the product and application, the form may be stripped after the concrete has set or may remain in place below grade.

In residential construction, concrete forming tubes are commonly used for deck and porch piers, small structural columns, post supports, and other locations where a round cast-in-place concrete element is practical. They are lightweight, easy to cut to length, and eliminate much of the labor needed to build a comparable round form from wood. Sonoco markets several Sonotube products for residential and commercial applications, including Builder’s Tube and commercial column forms. Sonoco’s current Sonotube product information describes the available systems and intended uses.

The tube itself is only the form. It does not determine the required pier diameter, footing size, depth, reinforcement, bearing area, or connection to the structure. Those details depend on the loads, soil conditions, project design, and applicable construction requirements.

Why It Matters

For an inspector or building consultant, the practical issue is not simply whether a Sonotube or similar form was used, but whether the completed concrete support appears appropriate for its intended load and is properly connected to the structure above. Visible concerns may include inadequate diameter, poor alignment, exposed or deteriorated concrete, improper post connections, or evidence that the pier has moved.

Because the brand name has become common job-site shorthand, calling the form a “Sonotube” does not necessarily mean the product was manufactured by Sonoco. When the manufacturer matters, check the actual product markings or project documents.

Example Usage

The porch framing was supported on round cast-in-place concrete piers that appeared to have been formed with fiber concrete forming tubes commonly referred to as Sonotubes. I evaluated the visible condition and connections of the completed supports; I did not verify the concealed footing dimensions or below-grade reinforcement.
