Adsorption

« Back to Glossary Index

Adsorption is the process by which atoms, ions, or molecules adhere to a surface without being absorbed into the volume. An example is how a filter adsorbs toxins to remove odors and volatile compounds in the air. In adsorption, molecules of a substance (the adsorbate) adhere to the surface of another substance (the adsorbent). Think of dust sticking to a piece of tape – it stays on the surface.
