Are you considering closing in the attic for a bonus room or enclosing the garage for a custom man cave? How will you condition the air without adding a cooling load to your home’s air conditioner?
Have you considered a ductless A/C system call the mini-split?
Watch this video from our friends at This Old House and learn more about installing the mini-split. They operate similar to the ducted system with a thermostat and have separate equipment inside and outside the room. The system comes complete with refrigerant pre-loaded in the condenser. The entire package is “plug and play”. Watch this video for a quick install demo.
During the first year (or two) the system will work great – delivering cool air directly to the room. However, somewhere around year 3 or 4, if you haven’t cleaned the system it could start to emit a foul odor, could toss debris down onto whatever is under it (your desk) and generally make a huge mess. It’s time to give it a bath.
The cleaning process includes removing the blow wheel cover and covering the entire unit with a huge plastic bib. The bib gets wrapped around the system and like a big funnel allows you to pipe the dirty water and cleaning solution out a drain pipe for disposal. You don’t remove the unit – it gets cleaned as it hangs on the wall.

I’m impressed, I have to admit. Rarely do I come across a blog that’s
both equally educative and interesting, and without a doubt, you
have hit the nail on the head. The problem is something
not enough folks are speaking intelligently about.
I’m very happy I stumbled across this during my search for something relating to this.
Good article and video! This technique is certainly something I will keep in the back of my mind and consider next time I am tasked with air conditioning repair in Frederick MD
