Estimated reading time: 1 minute

After 50 years in this business as a home builder and inspector, I’ve seen it all when it comes to code books. I’ve seen eager new inspectors overpay by hundreds of dollars and seasoned builders and tradespersons get stuck with a cheap counterfeit copy whose pages start falling out in the cab of their truck after a month.

Buying your next ICC code book seems simple, but it’s a decision with real consequences. As Chairperson of the Mississippi Home Inspector Regulatory Board, I want to help you make the smart choice. This guide will show you where to find authentic copies—both from the ICC’s main website and their official storefront on Amazon—and how to save a little money in the process.

The Two Main Options: The ICC Store vs. Amazon

Mostly, you’re choosing between buying directly from the source—the International Code Council (ICC)—or a massive online marketplace like Amazon. Each has significant pros and cons.

My Takeaway: If you’re an ICC member, the member discount often makes buying direct from the ICC the best and safest deal. For non-members who prefer the convenience of Amazon, the key is to shop directly from the official ICC storefront on Amazon to avoid the risk of fakes. If you choose that route, you still need to know what to look for.

How to Spot a Fake: My ‘Personal’ Checklist

If you buy from Amazon or another third-party site like eBay, inspect the book the moment it arrives. Counterfeits are incredibly common. Here are the red flags I look for:

  • Flimsy Paper: An authentic ICC book uses quality, heavy-stock paper. A fake feels thin and cheap, almost like a newspaper.
  • Weak Binding: Check the spine. Is the glue uneven? Does it feel brittle or like pages could fall out easily? A real ICC book has a rock-solid, professional binding.
  • Blurry or Faded Print: All text, diagrams, and tables in an authentic copy are crisp and sharp. Faded or blurry text is the #1 warning sign of a counterfeit.
  • Poor Quality Cover: Look for blurry images, text that isn’t perfectly aligned, or a cover that feels waxy or cheap.
  • Mismatched ISBN: The ISBN on the back cover must match the ISBN on the copyright page inside. If they don’t, send it back immediately—it’s a fake.

Beyond the Big Two: Other Authorized Resellers

While the ICC and Amazon are the most common sources, several other legitimate booksellers are authorized to sell ICC books. This can be a great way to price-shop while ensuring authenticity. Reputable sources include:

  • Builder’s Book, Inc.
  • Specialized bookstores like Books-A-Million
  • Textbook resellers like BetterWorldBooks or Biblio
  • Industry organizations (for example, the PHCC sometimes sells code books)

Final Word: Your Code Book is an Investment

Remember, your copy of the code book is one of the most important tools you own. It’s a professional expense and a critical reference that protects you, your clients, and the public. Trying to save $30 isn’t worth the risk of getting an illegal, poorly made counterfeit. Invest in the real thing.
