PEX

« Back to Glossary Index

The term PEX, or PEX tubing, refers to cross-linked polyethylene tubing, manufactured through the extrusion process. PEX was initially developed in Europe over half a century ago and later introduced in the United States, proving to be a reliable and cost-effective alternative to copper pipes. Unlike metal pipes, PEX does not corrode, rust, or accumulate mineral deposits, ensuring consistent water flow and quality. Its high flexibility allows for fewer fittings and easier installation in tight spaces, reducing potential leak points. PEX can expand, making it more resistant to bursting in freezing conditions than rigid pipes.

Commonly found in red (hot water), blue (cold water), and white (either), aiding installation and identification, it has a designed service life of many decades, often lasting the life of a building.
