A monolithic slab is a concrete foundation where the slab, footings, and sometimes even grade beams are poured simultaneously in one continuous operation (i.e., “monolithically”). This method contrasts with the more traditional approach, where footings are poured first and allowed to cure before the slab is poured separately. Monolithic slabs are standard in warmer climates with stable soil conditions, as they reduce construction time and cost. The edge of the slab is typically thickened to support load-bearing walls and perimeter loads, and the slab itself often contains reinforcing steel mesh or bars. Proper site preparation, including grading and compaction, ensures uniform support and minimizes settlement.
