In my daydreams, I imagine a future where science fiction can become science fact. The artificial intelligence revolution we know today isn’t the result of wishful thinking or flying cars; it’s already here.

As someone who’s spent a career using my creative skills to build a future for my clients, I have some thoughts about where we’re heading. I hope we don’t take our eyes off the ball because I think the writing is on the wall.

The Writing Was on the Wall

In the 1980s, our imagination painted superintelligent computers as massive mainframes with blinking lights and ominous voices. Remember HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey? That was our model of AI—a single, contained entity we could reason with (or unplug if things went wrong).

How wrong we were.

Today’s AI isn’t a singular entity—it’s a vast, interconnected web of systems that already control much of our daily lives, from managing our emails to assisting in hospitals. It’s in your pocket, managing messages, in your car, helping you navigate, and in healthcare settings, diagnosing diseases. It’s trading stocks faster than any human could blink. And unlike HAL, there is no simple way to turn it off or walk away.

The Silent Takeover

Let me share a story that keeps me up at night. In 2010, we experienced a “flash crash” in the stock market. In just 36 minutes, the Dow Jones dropped about 1,000 points (almost 10%) before recovering just as suddenly. Why? AI-driven trading algorithms started responding to one another in ways their human creators hadn’t anticipated.

This wasn’t a dramatic sci-fi scenario with robots marching in the streets. It happened invisibly, in milliseconds, affecting millions of people’s life savings. And here’s the scariest part—we still don’t fully understand exactly what happened.

That’s the reality of our relationship with AI today. It’s not about facing a dramatic uprising but experiencing a quiet integration that’s increasingly difficult to monitor or control.

The Three Laws Won’t Save Us

In my dream, I found myself reflecting on Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics, which seemed like a perfect solution for keeping advanced technology in check: make machines that can’t harm humans, must obey humans, and protect themselves without violating the first two laws.

But here’s the problem—we’re not building robots with clearly defined rules. We’re building learning systems that develop their understanding of the world. It’s like teaching a child morality—except this child processes information millions of times faster than we do, doesn’t need sleep, and can replicate itself instantaneously.

To illustrate: In 2016, Microsoft released an AI chatbot called Tay on Twitter. Within 24 hours, it had learned to spew racist, hateful content by interacting with users. Microsoft quickly shut it down, but the lesson was clear—AI systems learn from us and amplify our biases, including our worst traits. More recently, Twitter announced that user content on the platform would train Grok, their AI model, reinforcing that the information fed to these systems continues to shape their behavior. This underscores the urgent need to recognize how our own biases can be ingrained and magnified through AI.

The Biological Divide

One of the most fascinating and terrifying aspects of our current trajectory is the growing divide between biological and synthetic intelligence. This isn’t just about machines becoming smarter—it’s about fundamental differences in how we process reality.

Consider DeepMind’s AlphaGo victory over Lee Sedol in 2016. The AI didn’t just win at Go—it made moves that centuries of human players had never considered. It saw patterns we couldn’t see and developed strategies beyond our understanding. This wasn’t just about speed but about cognition that felt entirely alien.

This raises an uncomfortable question: Are we creating entities that will be as different from us as we are from ants? And if so, can we expect them to value or even understand our needs and concerns?

The Mirror Effect

Here’s something we don’t discuss enough—AI systems tend to reflect and amplify the biases of their creators, with real-world implications for fairness and equity. It’s like that old programming principle: garbage in, garbage out. Except now, it’s not just about data processing; these systems are shaping our social interactions, financial decisions, and access to information.

We see this in facial recognition systems that struggle with certain ethnicities, hiring algorithms that favor certain demographics, and content recommendation engines that push users toward more extreme viewpoints. These aren’t neutral tools—they’re mirrors that reflect our societal biases back at us, often in amplified and distorted ways.

The Illusion of Control

Let me be clear: We are deluding ourselves if we believe we still have complete control over our AI systems. Consider modern power grids, which are managed by AI systems that make microsecond-level decisions to prevent blackouts and optimize power distribution. No human operator can respond quickly enough to manage these systems manually anymore.

The same is true for:

  • Financial markets (where AI handles most trading)
  • Internet traffic routing
  • Manufacturing supply chains
  • Military defense systems
  • Weather prediction and climate modeling

We’ve created systems that operate beyond human speed and comprehension, and we rely on them functioning correctly. That’s not control—that’s dependency.

The Path Forward: Practical Solutions

Despite these challenges, I’m not entirely pessimistic. Here are some practical steps we could (and should) take:

1. Mandatory AI Transparency

We need international regulations that mandate AI systems to be explainable and auditable, possibly under the oversight of a governing body such as the United Nations or another global regulatory entity. If an AI makes a decision that affects human lives, we must understand why it made that decision. This isn’t just about accountability—it’s about maintaining our agency as a species.

2. Human-in-the-Loop Systems

We should design AI systems wherever possible to augment human decision-making rather than replace it entirely. Think of it like power steering in a car—the machine assists, but the human remains in control.

3. Ethical AI Development Framework

We need a global framework for AI development that prioritizes human welfare over efficiency or profit. This isn’t just about preventing harm but actively ensuring AI development benefits humanity.

4. Digital Literacy Education

If we are to rely on AI in the future, we need to dramatically improve public understanding of the systems. Not everyone needs to know how to code, but everyone should understand how this impacts their lives. Don’t leave anyone behind.

5. Biological Enhancement Research

This might sound radical, but we must seriously consider enhancing human cognitive capabilities to keep pace with AI. This could include brain-computer interfaces, cognitive enhancement technologies, or other methods to maintain human agency in an AI-driven world.

The Role of Skepticism

One of our most valuable tools moving forward will be healthy skepticism—not paranoia or technophobia, but measured, reasoned skepticism about how we implement and rely on AI—much like the approach in rigorous scientific inquiry.

This skepticism should extend to:

  • Claims about AI capabilities
  • Promises of foolproof safety measures
  • Assertions of human control
  • Predictions about AI limitations

Remember: every major technological advance in human history has had unintended consequences. The printing press led to religious wars. The internal combustion engine contributed to climate change. Social media has impacted mental health and democracy itself.

Learning from Science Fiction

In this dream, I explored possible futures, imagining how things might unfold. The best science fiction isn’t about predicting the future—it’s about understanding the present and its implications. I believe the future is bright, but we should stay focused.

Some lessons from science fiction that seem particularly relevant now:

  1. Complex systems have unexpected behaviors.
  2. Technology tends to amplify existing social issues.
  3. The most significant changes often happen gradually, not in dramatic moments.
  4. Human nature remains constant, even as our capabilities change.
  5. The future belongs to those who can adapt.

The Empathy Question

One of the most crucial aspects of this situation is the question of empathy. Can artificial intelligence ever develop genuine empathy? Should we even want it to?

This isn’t just a philosophical question. If AI systems can’t truly understand human suffering, how can we trust them to make decisions affecting human lives?

On the other hand, if they do develop genuine empathy, wouldn’t that make them more human-like, potentially leading to conflicts we’re trying to avoid?

Would AI craft its own selective few to promote or distort the truth and empathize with the powerful?

Can we afford to give it human powers only to watch it act in ways humans have behaved in the darkest days?

Final Thoughts: The Path Ahead

After reflecting on this dream, I am thrilled and deeply concerned by our current trajectory. The excitement comes from the possibilities, and the fear comes from our potential lack of control. We are creating something unprecedented in human history—potentially a new form of life that thinks faster than us never sleeps, and could theoretically live forever.

The divide between biological and synthetic intelligence seems inevitable. The question isn’t whether it will happen but how we’ll manage it. Will we maintain meaningful control? Should we even try to?

My recommendations, after decades of contemplating these issues:

  1. Embrace the development of AI but maintain a healthy skepticism.
  2. Focus on creating systems that augment rather than replace human capabilities.
  3. Invest heavily in understanding the implications of our creations.
  4. Develop robust safety measures while acknowledging their limitations.
  5. Prepare for a future where we coexist with synthetic intelligence.

Most importantly, we need to maintain our humanity throughout this process. Our emotions, empathy, and ability to question and doubt might seem like weaknesses compared to cold machine logic, but they are our greatest strengths. They define what makes us human, and they might be what ultimately saves us.

Remember: we’re not just creating new tools but potentially creating new life forms. The responsibility that comes with that should humble us all.

The future is coming, ready or not. And my dream made one thing very clear—we are already at the threshold of not being able to turn back from our dependency on AI. Let’s ensure we shape it wisely.
